Literature and libraries are my passions. In my writing and service work, I advocate:

For full-time, professional school librarians and 21st-century library services and resources in every school;

For professionalism in the field of school librarianship that centers on classroom-library collaboration for instruction;

For the integration of authentic multicultural and international children's and adolescent literature into the classroom-library curriculum;

For school and public library collaboration and for family literacy.

Young moms and babies from Pima County Public Library's Project L.I.F.T. (Literacy Involves Families Together) posed with me and their signed copies of my book, Read to Me/Vamos a leer, which is a poem I originally wrote for this project. I donate a portion of my proceeds from this book to Project L.I.F.T.

I serve on the Advisory Board for School Library Monthly, a magazine for school librarians. I co-author a column called "Literature and Life" that focuses on students' engagments with K-8 multicultural literature. In these literature circles facilitated by classroom-library collaboration, readers connect with the dispositions displayed by the characters and real people in the text set selections.

I am on the Board of Advisors of Worlds of Words: International Collection of Children's and Adolescent Literature (WOW). The physical collection is housed at the University of Arizona. I serve on the editorial board for WOW Stories.

In my 2009-2010 work with the American Library Association, I served on two national committees: Association of Library Services to Children and REFORMA Pura Belpré Book Award Committee and American Association of School Librarians School Library Media Program of the Year Award.
